Many men irrespective of their age experience hair loss-medically termed Alopecia. Hair loss is a pretty common dermatologist concern across the globe that can be caused due to variety of reasons including stress, underlying medical condition, poor lifestyle choices, pollution, head trauma, and more.

The most common type of hair loss in men, accounting for more than 90% of hair loss in men, is Pattern Baldness. It is primarily a hereditary form of hair loss affecting a lot of men nowadays. Recently researchers have found that 58% of men belonging to the age group of 30-50 years have experienced male pattern baldness. It takes usually 15-25 years to go bald, but this can even happen early. For some men (in about 25%), bald patches or spots can start to appear early i.e. between 20-25 years and by the age of 50 years, half of the men can have completely or partially bald scalps.

Male pattern baldness is not a serious health issue. Male pattern baldness treatment is only considered when the patient is displeased with his looks. This hereditary hair loss is inevitable and there is no way to prevent or stop it, however, one can delay it with some medications, hair growth supplements, or some cosmetic procedures.

Here’s what one must know about male pattern baldness-including what it is, its causes, symptoms, and treatments. [1, 2, 3, 4]

What is Male Pattern Baldness?

Male pattern baldness medically referred to as Androgenetic alopecia, is a progressive type of hair loss where men ultimately lose all their scalp hair. Men suffering from this condition can notice hair loss in a pattern. At first, they experience receding (thinning) hair at the temples (sides of the head) and also on top of the head. Gradually, a bald patch develops in the middle of the scalp. The bald patch on the crown (top of the head) and the thinning hair on the sides, over time, enlarge and join together, leaving a hairy patch on the front. Eventually, the hair on the front portion of the scalp also undergoes thinning. Lastly, a rim of hair remains around the sides and back of the scalp. In some men, this rim also thins and disappears, thereby resulting in total baldness. [1, 3]

Symptoms of Male Pattern Baldness:

  • Less dense hair
  • Extensive hair fall or hair loss
  • Loss of hair at temples and crown area
  • Receding hairline
  • Gradual hair thinning and ultimate resemblance of hair as ‘peach fuzz’
  • Bald spots or patches on the top of the head.

All these can progress to either partial or complete baldness, however, the rate at which the hair loss occurs in pattern differs among people. [3]

What are the Reasons Behind Male Pattern Baldness?

Various factors come into play when men experience pattern baldness. The Male Pattern Baldness causes are:

  • Age: With advancing age, hair growth slows down and there is no hair growing from the hair follicles. Therefore, the prevalence and severity of male pattern baldness are found to naturally increase with age. On average, the onset of male-pattern baldness is in the mid-20s, and when men become middle-aged, at least 50% of them experience partial or complete pattern baldness.
  • Hormones: Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a type of male sex hormone (testosterone), is believed to be associated with hair loss. When men have excessive production of DHT hormone in their bodies, they experience hair loss or balding on their scalp. That’s because, the hormones cause the hair follicles to shrink or miniaturize, leading to thinning hair and shorter hair growth cycles. The hair strands fall out and eventually result in baldness as the hair follicles no longer produce hair.
  • Genetics: Men who suffer from male pattern baldness are predisposed to it by their inherited genes. According to hair experts, hereditary or family history of having male pattern baldness accounts for about 80% of such cases.
  • Race: Male pattern baldness is more likely to develop in white men. They tend to experience more extensive hair loss than men of other descents such as Asian, African, and Native American. [4]

How to Treat Male Pattern Baldness?

Accepting baldness is difficult for most men. Many hair clinics are running out there that promise cosmetic procedures with incredible results, but they might not warn the patients about what can go wrong. Hair replacement options are always not effective and can be very expensive. Before one commits to any treatment, it’s better to consider different options.

Male pattern baldness cannot be permanently cured but certain medications and treatments do work out. The treatment options are effective in delaying hair loss and some can even partially restore the lost hair. Here are some of them:

  • PRP hair treatment: According to a recent research study, Platelet Rich Plasma therapy is positively affirmed to reverse stages 3 to 5A of male pattern baldness along with medical intervention. The procedure involves drawing of patient’s blood, processing it by centrifugation to separate the components, isolating of PRP layer, and finally administering the PRP into the bald portions of the scalp to encourage cell growth. In this treatment, the platelets found in PRP injections naturally produce growth factors and essential proteins to encourage hair growth from stem cells in the hair follicles and even improve blood flow. Along with medications, PRP therapy can be very beneficial to delay male pattern baldness.
  • FDA-approved medications: Topical Minoxidil and Oral Finasteride can help promote new hair growth and slow down the progression of male pattern baldness. However, these medications are proven to be successful only in the early stages of male pattern baldness and their continued usage is mandatory.
  • Natural health supplements: Two of the recent in-demand, premium quality, natural hair growth and nourishment formulas that can be used by anyone suffering from male pattern baldness are Folexin and Valotin. They are suitable for all hair types. The Folexin formula contains fo-ti, biotin, folic acid, and more than 20 vitamins, minerals, and herbs. Valotin is packed with hair growth support ingredients like vitamins A, C, B1, iron, and folate. Only 2 capsules daily with meals are recommended doses for these supplements.
  • Hair replacement/Transplantation: It is usually the last resort for alopecia patients. It is a surgical approach involving the harvesting of healthy hair follicles from the areas of active hair growth and their transfer to the areas of the scalp where hair thinning and balding have taken place.
