Back pain is one of the most common complaints globally, affecting millions of people across all age groups. It can range from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp pain, making it difficult to move or stand upright. Understanding the root causes and symptoms of back pain is essential to finding the right treatment options. In this comprehensive blog, we will explore the causes of back pain, its symptoms, and effective relief options, including natural supplements like Pro Joint Plus that can support joint health and alleviate discomfort.

Introduction to Back Pain

Back pain is not just an issue of discomfort—it can severely affect your quality of life. According to the American Chiropractic Association (ACA), at least 80% of people experience back pain at some point in their lives. This pain can arise from various factors, including injury, lifestyle habits, poor posture, or even an underlying medical condition.

With the prevalence of back pain rising due to sedentary lifestyles and desk jobs, understanding how to manage and prevent it has become more crucial than ever. Let’s begin by exploring the common causes of back pain and how it manifests in different people.

Common Causes of Back Pain

There are numerous factors that contribute to back pain, ranging from acute injuries to chronic conditions. Here are the most common causes:

1. Muscle or Ligament Strain

Strained muscles or ligaments in the back often result from heavy lifting, sudden awkward movements, or overexertion. Repeated strain can lead to muscle spasms, which in turn can trigger back pain.

2. Bulging or Ruptured Discs

The spinal discs act as cushions between the vertebrae. When a disc bulges or ruptures (also known as a herniated disc), it can press on nerves, leading to intense back pain. This is often associated with lower back pain or sciatica.

3. Arthritis

Arthritis, particularly osteoarthritis, can affect the lower back. Over time, arthritis in the spine can narrow the space around the spinal cord (a condition known as spinal stenosis), causing pain.

4. Skeletal Irregularities

Conditions like scoliosis (a sideways curvature of the spine) can lead to back pain. These irregularities place additional strain on muscles and nerves in the back.

5. Osteoporosis

Bones weakened by osteoporosis can result in compression fractures of the spine, leading to severe pain. This is more common in older adults and postmenopausal women.

6. Poor Posture

Long periods of sitting, especially in positions that do not support the natural curvature of the spine, can lead to back pain. Poor posture strains the back muscles and ligaments, contributing to discomfort.

7. Injuries or Accidents

Car accidents, falls, or sports injuries can cause acute back pain. Depending on the severity of the injury, the pain can range from mild to debilitating.

Symptoms Associated with Back Pain

Back pain symptoms vary depending on the cause, severity, and location. Here are some of the common symptoms associated with back pain:

Dull, Aching Pain: This type of pain is usually localized to a specific area of the lower back and may be exacerbated by movement or standing for long periods.

Sharp, Stabbing Pain: If you experience sharp pain when moving or bending, it could be due to a muscle strain or disc problem.

Radiating Pain: Pain that travels from your lower back down your leg (sciatica) could indicate a nerve issue, such as a herniated disc.

Muscle Stiffness: Muscle spasms or stiffness in the back can limit mobility and make daily tasks difficult.

Numbness or Tingling: If your back pain is accompanied by numbness or tingling in your legs or feet, it may suggest nerve involvement.

Back Pain Relief Options

Once the cause of your back pain is identified, there are several effective options for relief. These range from lifestyle changes and physical therapy to natural supplements and medications.

1. Lifestyle Changes

One of the simplest yet most effective ways to prevent and manage back pain is through lifestyle adjustments. Improving your posture, using ergonomic furniture, and taking regular breaks from sitting can go a long way in preventing pain. Additionally, maintaining a healthy weight reduces strain on your back muscles and spine.

2. Exercise and Stretching

Regular physical activity is crucial for keeping your back strong and flexible. Focus on exercises that strengthen the core muscles, such as yoga and Pilates, which provide support to your spine. Stretching also helps maintain flexibility and reduces the risk of muscle strain.

Simple back pain exercises include:

Cat-Cow Stretch: This yoga move increases spine flexibility and reduces tension.

Pelvic Tilts: Strengthens lower back muscles and improves posture.

Knee-to-Chest Stretch: Relieves tension in the lower back and improves flexibility.

3. Heat and Cold Therapy

Heat therapy, such as heating pads or warm baths, can relax tense muscles and improve blood flow to the affected area. Cold therapy, using ice packs, helps reduce inflammation and numb sharp pain.

Alternating between heat and cold therapy is often beneficial for acute back pain, especially after an injury.

4. Over-the-Counter Medications

Non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, can be effective in reducing back pain and inflammation. However, long-term use of NSAIDs should be avoided due to potential side effects such as stomach irritation.

5. Natural Supplements for Back Pain Relief (Featuring Pro Joint Plus)

ProJoint Plus Bottle

Pro Joint Plus is a blend of powerful ingredients designed to support joint health and reduce inflammation, a common cause of back pain.

Many users have reported reduced pain and improved mobility after incorporating this supplement into their daily routine.

When to See a Doctor

While many cases of back pain can be managed with lifestyle changes and over-the-counter treatments, it is essential to seek medical advice if you experience any of the following:

Pain that lasts longer than a few weeks

Severe pain that does not improve with rest or medications

Pain accompanied by unexplained weight loss

Numbness or tingling in your legs or feet

Difficulty controlling your bladder or bowels (which could indicate a serious condition such as cauda equina syndrome)

In these cases, a healthcare professional can perform a physical exam, order diagnostic tests like X-rays or MRIs, and recommend appropriate treatments such as physical therapy, prescription medications, or even surgery if necessary.

Conclusion

Back pain can be debilitating, but understanding its causes and symptoms can help you find effective relief options. Whether it’s through lifestyle changes, exercises, or natural supplements like Pro Joint Plus, there are numerous ways to manage back pain and improve your quality of life.

By taking proactive steps to care for your back and addressing pain early, you can avoid long-term discomfort and maintain a healthy, active lifestyle.

Bacopa Monnieri – A Powerful Brain Supplement!

Bacopa Monnieri, also known as water hyssop or Brahmi, is a perennial herb that grows in wetlands and marshes. It is native to India and has been used in Ayurvedic medicine for centuries to improve cognitive function, memory, and overall brain health [1].

In recent years, Bacopa Monnieri has gained popularity in the Western world as a natural supplement for improving brain function, reducing stress, and improving overall health. In this blog, we’ll take a closer look at the potential benefits and uses of Bacopa Monnieri and its potential side effects.

Benefits of Bacopa Monnieri for the Brain

1. Improves cognitive function and memory

One of the main benefits of Bacopa Monnieri is its ability to improve cognitive function and memory. Multiple studies have shown that taking Bacopa Monnieri supplements can improve memory recall, information processing speed, and overall cognitive function.

One study [2] published found that participants who took Bacopa Monnieri supplements for 12 weeks showed significant improvement in their cognitive function and memory compared to the placebo group.

2. Reduces stress and anxiety

Bacopa Monnieri has also been shown to have stress-reducing properties. In a study published in the Journal of Ethnopharmacology, participants who took Bacopa Monnieri supplements for 12 weeks reported a significant reduction in anxiety and stress levels [3].

This effect may be due to Bacopa Monnieri’s ability to regulate cortisol levels in the body. Cortisol is a hormone released in response to stress, and high cortisol levels can lead to anxiety, depression, and other health problems.

3. Improves overall brain health

Bacopa Monnieri has been shown to have antioxidant properties, which can help protect the brain from damage caused by free radicals. Free radicals are unstable molecules that can cause oxidative stress and damage to cells, including brain cells.

By protecting the brain from oxidative stress, Bacopa Monnieri may help improve overall brain health and reduce the risk of age-related cognitive decline.

Uses of Bacopa Monnieri

1. Cognitive enhancement

As mentioned earlier, Bacopa Monnieri is commonly used as a natural supplement to enhance cognitive function and memory. It is often used by students and professionals who want to improve their focus and productivity [3].

Read about a Nootropic that uses Bacopa Monnieri: Noocube

2. Stress reduction

Bacopa Monnieri is also used as a natural remedy for reducing stress and anxiety. It is often recommended for people who experience chronic stress or anxiety disorders [4].

3. Anti-inflammatory

Bacopa Monnieri has been shown to have anti-inflammatory properties [5], which can help reduce inflammation in the body. This effect may be beneficial for people with inflammatory conditions, such as arthritis.

4. Skin health

Bacopa Monnieri has been traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine for improving skin health. It is believed to help reduce inflammation and improve skin elasticity, which can help reduce the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines.

How does Bacopa Monnieri work for the brain?

One of the primary ways that Bacopa Monnieri works are by increasing the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that plays a critical role in learning, memory, and attention [6]. Acetylcholine is known to be involved in the formation and consolidation of new memories, and decreased acetylcholine levels are commonly observed in individuals with cognitive decline and neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer’s disease.

Bacopa Monnieri contains active compounds known as bacosides, which have been shown to enhance the activity of choline acetyltransferase, an enzyme that is responsible for synthesizing acetylcholine. By increasing the levels of acetylcholine in the brain, Bacopa Monnieri may improve cognitive function, enhance memory retention and recall, and increase the ability to focus and concentrate.

Another way that Bacopa Monnieri works is by reducing oxidative stress and inflammation in the brain. Oxidative stress and inflammation are two primary mechanisms that contribute to neuronal damage and cell death, which are characteristic of many neurodegenerative disorders like Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease [7]. The bacosides in Bacopa Monnieri have been shown to have potent antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties, protecting the brain from damage and promoting neuronal survival.

Additionally, Bacopa Monnieri has been shown to modulate the levels of certain neurotransmitters like dopamine and serotonin, which are involved in regulating mood, anxiety, and stress. Studies have demonstrated that Bacopa Monnieri can increase dopamine and serotonin levels in the brain, leading to reduced anxiety and depression-like behaviors.

Overall, Bacopa Monnieri appears to work through multiple mechanisms to enhance brain function and promote cognitive health. Its ability to increase acetylcholine levels, reduce oxidative stress and inflammation, and modulate neurotransmitter levels makes it a promising therapeutic option for individuals with cognitive decline, neurodegenerative disorders, and other conditions affecting brain function.

Potential Side Effects of Bacopa Monnieri

While Bacopa Monnieri is generally considered safe, some people may experience side effects when taking the supplement. Common side effects include:

1. Digestive issues

Some people may experience digestive issues, such as nausea, cramping, or diarrhea when taking Bacopa Monnieri supplements. These side effects are usually mild and go away on their own.

2. Dry mouth

Bacopa Monnieri may cause dry mouth, especially at higher doses. This side effect can usually be alleviated by drinking more water or chewing gum.

3. Fatigue

In some cases, Bacopa Monnieri may cause fatigue or drowsiness. This side effect is usually mild and goes away after a few days of taking the supplement.

4. Interference with medications

Bacopa Monnieri may interact with certain medications, including thyroid hormone replacement therapy, sedatives, and antihistamines. If you are taking any medications, it’s important to talk to your healthcare provider before taking Bacopa Monnieri supplements.

Conclusion

Bacopa Monnieri is a natural herb that has been used for centuries in Ayurvedic medicine to improve cognitive function [8], memory, and overall brain health. In recent years, it has gained popularity in the Western world as a natural supplement for reducing stress and anxiety, improving skin health, and reducing inflammation.

While Bacopa Monnieri is generally safe, some people may experience mild side effects when taking the supplement.
Heart failure or congestive heart failure is a cardiac condition wherein the heart is unable to pump enough oxygen-rich blood to all body tissues and organs because of stiffness of heart muscles or it becoming too weak. As organs and tissues are not able to receive blood and other nutrients, eventually their functioning gets affected.

Heart failure can’t be understood as the stopping of a heartbeat rather it is just a condition where the heart is not able to work normally as it should. [1, 2]

What causes Heart Failure?

There are several factors contributing to heart failure, including:

Hypertension- Due to high blood pressure, extra strain can be put on the heart and if not controlled by medications, the patient can get heart failure.

Arrhythmias- These are abnormal cardiac rhythms such as atrial fibrillation wherein the patient has a persistent fast heart rate that impairs the contraction strength of the heart and causes less efficient pumping of the heart.

Coronary Artery Disease- It is a medical condition where the arteries that supply blood to the heart get clogged usually because of the deposits of bad cholesterol.

Cardiomyopathy- It refers to the inherited or acquired conditions that affect the heart muscles leading to failure of heart function.

Congenital Heart Disease- It refers to all birth defects that impair the normal working of the heart.

Heart Valve Disease- It is a condition where the heart valves either get damaged or have a defect that increases the volume and strain on the heart, hence weakening it and leading to its failure.

Toxicity- Certain chemotherapy drugs and excess intake of alcohol can be toxic for heart muscle cells and result in their non-functioning or malfunctioning.

Metabolic Disorders- There are some endocrine causes of heart failure including diabetes and hyperthyroidism with an overactive thyroid.

Others- Obesity and behaviors like having a diet rich in cholesterol and sodium, a sedentary lifestyle, and smoking. [1]

Stages of Heart Failure

According to the degree of symptoms or functional limits, there are 4 stages of heart failure named as Stage A, Stage B, Stage C, and Stage D.

Stage A

The patients having stage A heart failure are the ones considered to be at high risk of developing heart failure. This means they neither have heart failure nor its symptoms. It can be because of factors including:

Family history

Heart attack

Coronary Artery Disease

Hypertension

Diabetes

Obesity

Metabolic syndrome

Earlier records of having rheumatic fever

Past history of drinking too much alcohol

History of intake of drugs that can damage the heart muscles like cancer medications.

Stage B

The patients falling under this stage have asymptomatic or silent heart failure. They have been diagnosed via echocardiogram (echo) for some structural changes in the heart such as systolic left ventricular dysfunction which is strongly associated with developing heart failure. People with stage B heart failure usually show an ejection factor (EF) of 40 percent or less on echo.

Stage C

When the patients experiencing structural changes in the hearts start to exhibit symptoms of heart failure, they are considered to be Stage C heart failure patients. Such patients either currently have signs and symptoms of heart failure or previously had them. The most common symptoms that the patients can expect to see include:

Nausea

Fatigue or extreme tiredness

Weakness

Dizziness

Lightheadedness

Coughing and wheezing

Increased urge to urinate at night

Inability to exercise

Shortness of breath or breathing problems

Difficulty in concentrating

Rapid or irregular heartbeat even when the body is at rest

Weight gain

Swollen ankles, feet, lower legs, and even abdomen (edema).

Stage D

Patients are considered to be in stage D heart failure when their heart failure symptoms fail to respond to treatments and require aggressive medical therapy. It is the advanced or final stage of heart failure. The patients are likely to show extreme cases of symptoms as mentioned in stage C heart failure at rest or on mild/minimal exertion. [1, 2. 3]

The Treatment Plan For Each Stage Of Heart Failure

Heart failure can be treated based on the stage at which heart failure is determined by the doctor.

Stage A Treatment

As it is a pre-heart failure stage, the primary treatment plan includes preventive measures such as:

Smoking cessation

No alcohol abuse or usage of recreational drugs

Treatment for high cholesterol with drugs

Doing regular cardio exercises, being active and fit

Treatment for hypertension through intake of a low sodium diet, lifestyle modification, and certain medications to control high blood pressure

Taking medications to treat underlying health issues like diabetes.

Stage B Treatment

The usual treatment plan would include all the treatments/ preventive measures listed in stage A treatment along with the medications used to treat heart failure such as:

Angiotensin-Converting Enzyme Inhibitor (ACE-I)

Angiotensin II receptor blockers (ARB), also called angiotensin-2 receptor antagonists

Beta-blockers also called beta-adrenergic blocking agents- for patients who had a heart attack and their ejection factor is 40% or less

Aldosterone antagonists- for patients who had a heart attack or have diabetes and ejection factor of 30% or less

SGLT2 inhibitor medication

Other medications based on the presence of other health issues in the patients such as blood thinners (anticoagulants), statins (cholesterol-lowering drugs), and dig-oxin

For those having coronary artery disease, valve disease, or a heart attack, possible surgeries or interventions are provided for their treatment.

Stage C Treatment

The treatment plan includes the treatments listed for stage A and Stage B heart failure patients along with other treatments as listed below:

Angiotensin-receptor neprilysin inhibitors (ARNIs)

Prescribed diuretics (water pills)- if symptoms persist

Channel blockers

Possible fluid restriction

Medications to bring the fast heart rate back to normal i.e. 70 beats/min

Hydralazine and isosorbide dinitrate combination-specifically meant for African-Americans having moderate to severe heart failure symptoms when other treatments are not able to provide relief

Assess fluid retention by keeping track of body weight

Placement of biventricular pacemaker- a possible cardiac resynchronization therapy

Possible implantable cardiac defibrillator therapy.

Stage D Treatment

The usual treatment plan includes treatments of the other three stages of heart failure along with evaluation for more advanced treatment options, such as:

Left ventricular assist devices

Heart surgery

Heart transplantation

Valve replacement surgery

Percutaneous coronary intervention or angioplasty

Continuous infusion of intravenous inotropic drugs

Hospice or palliative care or research therapies.

Cholesterol is a lipid-like (fatty) substance present in the blood that our body usually needs to act as precursors for the production of Vitamin D, hormones, digestive acids to help in the breakdown of fats in one’s diet, and other important biological substances. It is one of those terms that everyone may be aware of but doesn’t know its actual meaning when it comes down to their health.

To clearly understand cholesterol, one must know about triglycerides too. Triglycerides are the fatty components of the body or those fats that a person receives through food. Its levels in blood tests indicate the fats that the body has absorbed in the blood from the recently eaten foods. The triglycerides are later packaged by the liver as fats in adipose tissues and some of them are turned into cholesterol. So, cholesterol marks the fats that a person has received through diet over a long period. This means, after a few days or weeks of eating a fatty meal, an individual has high cholesterol levels in their blood.

As soon as people hear the word “cholesterol,” mostly they relate it to health issues. However, that’s not always true. Cholesterol can be bad and good and only when there is too much bad cholesterol in one’s body and less good cholesterol, there is a high risk of cardiac problems like stroke and heart attack. So, what’s the difference between the two types of cholesterol? How do keep the good and bad cholesterol in balance for maintaining good health? Continue reading to get into the heart of the matter. [1, 2, 3]

What do Good and Bad Cholesterol Mean?

Good cholesterol medically refers to the High-Density Lipoproteins (HDL) while Bad cholesterol is the Low-Density Lipoprotein (LDL) or Very Low-Density Lipoprotein (VLDL) produced in the liver. All these lipoproteins in blood together make up for one’s total cholesterol.

National Institute of Health has prepared a chart depicting the different levels of bad and good cholesterol as well as total cholesterol and the categories to which they belong. It is as follows:

Bad Cholesterol (LDL) Level

Less than 100 mg/dL: Optimal category

100-129 mg/dL: Near-Optimal

130-159 mg/dL: Borderline High

160-189 mg/dL: High

190 mg/dL and above: Very High.

Good Cholesterol (HDL) Level

Less than 40 mg/dL: It shows a greater possibility of having heart disease

40-59 mg/dL: The higher the levels the better is heart health

60 mg/dL and higher: It indicates minimal or no risk of heart disease.

Total Cholesterol Level

Below 200 mg/dL: Desirable category

200-239 mg/dL: Borderline high

240 mg/dL and above: High.

In a lipid profile test done on the patient’s blood sample, the healthcare provider can detect the levels of total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, HDL cholesterol, and even triglycerides. After knowing that, the doctor can accordingly treat the patients and guide them on how to bring their cholesterol levels in balance. [3]

Good Cholesterol Vs Bad Cholesterol

The role of the good type of cholesterol is to transport the excess cholesterol from all the blood vessels throughout the body to the liver where it can be eliminated from the body. This way, it may protect the body against the narrowing of the blood vessels. However, its levels must be at least 60 mg/dL or higher otherwise those who have 40 mg/dL or below are at an increased risk for heart disease.

On the other side, a bad type of cholesterol is problematic as it can worsen the narrowing of arteries and blood vessels by building along their inner walls. The medical condition where this plaque build-up occurs and results in hard and narrow arteries is called atherosclerosis. It can result in reduced flow of blood to the heart, kidney disease, peripheral artery disease, and heart disease. Ideally, the levels of bad cholesterol must be as low as possible. A normal person usually would have LDL levels less than 100mg/dL while those who have above 100mg/dL of LDL or VLDL could be at high risk of developing severe health complications. [2]

Causes and Complications of Having High Levels of Bad Cholesterol:

The causes of having high levels of LDL cholesterol include:

A fat-rich diet

Sedentary lifestyle

Liver disease

Chronic kidney disease

Family history

Obesity or Syndrome X-a metabolic syndrome

Smoking

Excessive intake of alcohol

HIV/AIDS

Hypothyroidism

Lupus

Diabetes

A side effect of the intake of certain medications to treat other health issues like acne, HIV/AIDS, hypertension, cancer, irregular heart rhythms, and organ transplants.

As, the presence of high levels of bad cholesterol obstructs the flow of oxygen-rich blood that the heart needs, it can result in:

Stroke

Chest pain (Angina)

Heart attack [1,3]

How to Balance HDL and LDL levels?

There are various ways that a person can raise the levels of good cholesterol (HDL) and lower the levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) to rebalance them to normal numbers and minimize the risk of heart disease and other health issues. These include:

Change in Diet- Adopt a heart-healthy diet that involves cutting down on trans fats like eating red meat, butter, and hydrogenated oils; limiting sugar intake, and increasing the intake of good fats as found in the fish, avocado, and flax seed, and even fibers that can be derived from plant-based foods. Mainly vegan diets can help in reducing the risk of cardiac problems.

Regular Exercises- Try for 30 minutes daily workout of moderate or high intensity for at least 5 days per week. This way one can maintain a body mass index of 30 or less and have a stable body weight.

Lifestyle Modifications- This includes quitting smoking, limiting excessive alcohol consumption, and managing stress through different relaxation techniques.

Intake of LDL-Lowering Medications- If natural ways don’t work out, the doctor can prescribe medications to normalize the cholesterol levels. [1,3]

Outlook:

In the majority of instances, elevated cholesterol is a warning indication. However, even if a diagnosis of high cholesterol does not guarantee heart disease or a stroke, it should be addressed carefully.

If a person has high cholesterol, they may take actions to lower it, which will likely lessen their risk of heart disease and stroke. Changes in lifestyle that lower cholesterol also improves general health.

Prevention Advice

One is never too young to consider avoiding high cholesterol levels. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an essential first step. Here are some adjustments you can make immediately:

Replace white rice with brown rice and standard pasta with whole wheat pasta.

Instead of high-fat salad dressings, use olive oil and a dab of lemon juice to season salads.

Eat more seafood. At least two servings of fish should be consumed every week.

Substitute seltzer water or plain water flavored with fresh fruit slices for soda or fruit juice.

Instead of frying meats, bake them in the oven.

Substitute non-fat Greek yogurt for sour cream. Greek yogurt tastes similarly sour.

Choose whole grain cereals over sugar-filled ones. Try using cinnamon instead of sugar as a topping. [4]

References:

https://health.clevelandclinic.org/hdl-vs-ldl-cholesterol/

https://akhealth.org/whats-the-difference-between-good-and-bad-cholesterol/

https://www.medicinenet.com/ hdl_vs_ldl_cholesterol_differences/article.htm

https://www.healthline.com/health/hdl-vs-ldl-cholesterol#outlook

In the human body, free radicals produced by oxidation process disrupt cell membranes and other components, such as cellular proteins, lipids, and DNA. When oxygen is metabolized, unstable chemicals known as “free radicals” are produced. These molecules steal electrons from other molecules, damaging DNA and other cells.

Oxidative stress is generated by excess free radical generation in the body and a deficiency of antioxidants to battle this oxidation. The body can withstand some free radicals and need them for optimal function. However, over time, the damage caused by excess free radicals may become irreversible and contribute to certain diseases like heart and liver condition and certain cancers like oral, stomach, and bowel cancers. Free radicals are produced when the body turns glucose into energy, but this is not the only route. Stress, cigarette smoking, alcohol, UV radiation, pollution, and other factors can also promote oxidation in the body. [1]

Other than this, numerous environmental influences, including strenuous exercise, consuming foods with oils fried at high temperatures, and pesticides in foods, can promote oxidative damage. Free radicals have been recognized as a probable cause of cancer and apparent aging by damaging the cells and DNA. However, if one maintains a high consumption of antioxidants, these antioxidants can battle the generation of free radicals and maintain the body’s optimal level.

Following Are the Ailments Caused by Free Radicals

Degradation of the eye lens, a factor in vision loss

Inflammatory joint disease (arthritis)

Damage to the brain’s nerve cells contributes to diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.

A speeding of the aging process or premature aging

Since free radicals induce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol to adhere to arterial walls, they raise the risk of coronary heart disease and malignancies caused by DNA damage.

Antioxidants and Reactive Oxygen Species

Certain foods contain antioxidants that can prevent some of the damage caused by free radicals by neutralizing them. Examples include antioxidants like vitamins A, C, and E and minerals like copper, zinc, and selenium.

Plant phytochemicals are believed to have better antioxidant properties than vitamins or minerals. These antioxidants include phytochemicals, which are known as non-nutrient antioxidants like lycopene which is present in tomatoes, and anthocyanins present in cranberries. [2]

Antioxidant Rich Diet- That Help Fight Various Diseases

Diet becomes significant due to the widespread consumption of processed foods and sugar, which are counterproductive in the fight against free radicals and oxidative stress. By modifying the diet, one might preserve the body’s good balance, which is essential for living a healthy life. [1][3]

Also, a diet rich in antioxidants may lower the risk of multiple diseases (including cardiac disease and cancers). In addition, antioxidants eliminate free radicals from the body’s cells and prevent or minimize oxidative damage.

The protective impact of antioxidants is still being investigated globally. For example, men who consume an abundance of the antioxidant lycopene, which is found in tomatoes, apricots, pink grapefruit, and watermelon, may have a lower risk of developing prostate cancer than other men. However, lycopene has also been associated with a decreased risk of type 2 diabetes.

Lutein, which is found in spinach and maize, has been linked to a lower incidence of age-related eye lens degeneration and loss of vision in older people. Intake of lutein in diet may also improve memory and prevent cognitive decline, according to research.

According to studies, flavonoid-rich diets protect against certain diseases, including cancer and metabolic ailments. The most prevalent sources of flavonoids include apples, grapes, citrus fruits, berries, tea, onions, olive oil, and red wine. [1][3]

Which Foods are Rich in Antioxidants?

Antioxidants are present in a wide range of fruits, vegetables, and even spices. Down below is a list of foods that one can consume before and after workout to counteract oxidative stress and reduce the number of free radicals in the body.

Antioxidant-rich plant foods are plentiful. They are particularly rich in fruits and vegetables, as well as nuts, whole grains, and some meats, poultry, and fish.

Good sources of specific antioxidants include:

Zoochemical which is present in red meat, offal, and fish Zinc which is rich in seafood, nuts, lean meat, and milk

Vitamin E which is present in vegetable oils, whole grains, avocados, nuts, seeds

Vitamin C which is present in oranges, kiwifruit, mangoes, capsicum, strawberries, broccoli, spinach,

Vitamin A which is present in sweet potatoes, carrots, milk, and egg yolks

Polyphenols which are present in herbs

Lycopene present in tomatoes, apricots, and watermelon

Lutein which is present in green, leafy vegetables like spinach, and even corn

Lignans present in the sesame seeds, whole grains, and vegetables

Isoflavonoids present in soybeans, lentils, peas, tofu, and milk

Indoles which are present in broccoli, cabbage, and cauliflower

Flavonoids which are present in tea, green tea, onion, citrus fruits, and red wine

Cryptoxanthins which are present in pumpkin and red capsicum,

Copper which is present in nuts, lean meat, and milk

Catechins which are found in red wine and tea

Beta-carotene, which is rich in pumpkin, spinach, parsley, mangoes, apricots, and carrots

Anthocyanins present in the berries and grapes

Allium sulfur compounds which are present in garlic and onion.[1] [2]

Recommendations for Antioxidants in The Diet

To have a healthy and well-balanced diet, it is recommended that one must consume a range of foods from the 5 main food groups daily to fight side effects caused by free radicals in the body:

Veggies and legumes or beans

Fruits and cereals with entire grains

Lean meat, poultry, or substitutes like fish, eggs, tofu, legumes, nuts, and seeds

Dairy and dairy substitutes – predominantly low-fat (decreased fat milk is not advised for small children under 2 years)

To achieve one nutritional needs, one should consume at least one serving of fruits and vegetables every day. Depending on gender, age, and life stage are generally equivalent to a medium-sized piece of fruit or a half-cup of cooked vegetables. [1] [3]

Prevention

It is important to note that the body requires both free radicals and antioxidants. Unfortunately, too much or too little of either might cause health concerns.

Among the lifestyle and dietary modifications that may minimize oxidative stress in the body are:

Consuming a healthy, balanced diet rich in fruits and vegetables

Reducing consumption of processed foods, especially those heavy in sugars and fats

Regular exercise aids with quitting smoking

Avoiding or minimizing exposure to pollutants and harsh chemicals to reduce stress

Maintaining a healthy weight may aid in the reduction of oxidative stress. Extra fat cells generate inflammatory chemicals that promote immune cell inflammatory activity and free radical generation. [3]

Note

Oxidative stress is caused by an excess of free radicals in the body’s cells. During regular metabolic processes, the body produces free radicals. Damage to DNA, proteins, and cells caused by oxidative stress can contribute to aging. It may also cause variety of health disorders, such as diabetes, cancer, and neurodegenerative diseases like Alzheimer’s.

Antioxidants are produced by the body to combat these free radicals. The food of an individual is also a significant source of antioxidants. Changes to one’s diet and lifestyle may help lower oxidative stress. These may include maintaining a healthy weight, engaging in regular physical activity, and consuming a balanced, nutritious diet rich in fruits and vegetables. [3]

References

https://www.betterhealth.vic.gov.au/health/healthyliving/antioxidants

https://blog.dnafit.com/foods-to-preload-with-to-combat-oxidative-stress

https://www.medicalnewstoday.com/articles/324863#prevention

Alzheimer’s is a progressive neurologic disease that is gradually increasing at a drastic rate. It is a medical condition, a type of dementia affecting one’s memory, behavior, and thinking as the brain shrinks (atrophy) or when the brain cells die. It is usually seen in old people, mostly who are aged above 65 years. In today’s time, throughout the world, Alzheimer’s disease is considered to be one of the primary causes of disability and dependency among senior citizens and the seventh leading cause of death among all diseases. [1]

Alzheimer’s disease is not only a challenging health concern for the patient but also for every family member or those who stay with the patient at home. When any aged loved ones are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, their family has to come forward to take care of them as long as possible. It can be highly beneficial if patients stay in a familiar environment, which is their home, but as their mental health declines, it would be even more difficult to take care of them.

There is no such definite solution in care for Alzheimer’s patients, so the caregivers usually devise their strategies to address the unique mixed symptoms of the patients. Furthermore, the effectiveness of certain ways employed in patient care at home is likely to change during the course of the patient’s illness. In that case, the only way to figure out what would work best for the patient is through constant trial and error. [3]

A caretaker of an Alzheimer’s patient must keep some things in mind which are recommended by the doctor. Continue reading to know about them in detail.

1. Come Up with a Daily Routine Care

By establishing a daily sequence of activities and tasks for Alzheimer’s patients, they can stay focused and oriented all day. The daily plan can be made after observing the routines of the patients and looking for patterns in their behavior and mood. Keep in mind the abilities and preferences of the patients may change at different times of the day, so be flexible and try to adapt when required. It is very important to have clear communication and understanding with the patients to facilitate the daily care tasks. [3]

2. Plan Engaging Activities and Encourage Socialization

Caregivers can keep Alzheimer’s patients active and interested by engaging them in different routine activities like cooking, walking, watching a movie, playing games, dancing, visiting friends and relatives, and many more. So, in a daily care plan, incorporate meaningful activities and hobbies that match the patient’s abilities and interests. It’s always recommended to build on their current skills instead of teaching something new. If the patient is getting agitated or frustrated, redirect their attention to something else. [1, 3]

3. Encourage and Support with Short Term Memory

In the early stages of Alzheimer’s disease, the patients may need some assistance and prompt to help with their tasks that involve the use of memory and thinking. This includes handling money and bills, remembering words and names, scheduling appointments, or keeping track of medications. A caretaker’s role must be to encourage the patients to try to cooperate and only help when they are not able to do that task on their own after their failed attempts. Also, they must be encouraged to make reminders to help them remember things. [1]

4. Try to Provide a Secure Environment

Alzheimer’s can have an impact on the problem-solving and judgment abilities of the patients, which can increase their risk of injury. So, the caretaker must encourage safety by taking certain precautions to avoid fire, burns fall, and any type of injury. All medicines, alcohol, poisonous cleaning products, firearms, and potentially hazardous tools and utensils must be kept away from their reach and locked. Also, ensure that the patient’s room does not have items cluttered here and there. [1]

5. Take Care of Eating Habits

The caretaker must adjust the meals for the patients to check on the nutrients they would need to maintain a healthy weight. Some patients are reported to crave constantly for food while some do struggle to consume sufficient minerals and calories. The patients must be allowed to choose what they want to eat, small meals must be given throughout the day, and the food must be served in utensils that they can easily hold. [1]

6. Research on the Behavior of Alzheimer’s Patients and Manage Them

Some of the behaviors usually seen in Alzheimer’s patients include sun downing (getting restless, agitated, and irritated in late afternoons and evenings) and sleep problems, wandering, hallucinations and delusions. As a caretaker, steps must be taken to manage these behaviors and avoid any mis-happening like getting eloped or lost. [3]

7. Deal with Driving Issues of Alzheimer’s Patients

Alzheimer’s patients have impaired cognitive and physical abilities, which are very much needed to safely drive automobiles. So, even if the patients knew to drive earlier, they no longer must be allowed to do the same. The patients may vehemently resist that so instead of arguing with them provide them other options for transportation so that their routine is not affected. [3]

What to do about Burnout in Alzheimer’s Caregivers?

The care for any kind of dementia can be emotionally challenging and improbably demanding. Alzheimer’s caregivers can overcome their difficulties in dealing with Alzheimer’s patients and even their burnout by being patient and flexible, prioritizing self-care, and also receiving from friends and family.

To take care of Alzheimer’s patients, the caretaker and care recipient can even consider in-home services by professional caregivers. Some of them could provide non-medical aids like daily assistance while others can provide medical care from a licensed health professional. These in-home services include personal care services (like eating, dressing, exercising, bathing, toileting, etc.), homecare services (like doing daily household chores, shopping, or cooking), companion services (like recreation activities and supervision), and skilled care services (such as wound care, physical therapy, giving injections, etc.). [1,2,3]

References:

https://www.thehealthsite.com/diseases-conditions/alzheimers-diseases-how-to-take-care-of-the-patient-at-home-910991/

https://www.alz.org/help-support/caregiving/care-options/in-home-care

https://www.agingcare.com/articles/alzheimers-disease-care-at-home-139990.htm

A workout routine is vital for our general well-being including cardiovascular health. The heart is just like a battery of the body and daily exercises can help improve this battery’s life and output. This is possible because the heart is getting trained by exercises to handle more stress and transfer the oxygen-rich blood to all other organs, hence providing more energy. Staying active can help in the modification of risk factors like hypertension, high cholesterol, high blood sugar, and inflammation that can result in heart diseases. And if done right, continuing exercises when having heart issues can even be safe.

However, there are instances when exercise can turn out to be too much for your body to accept and become a threat to cardiac health. When does this happen? Let’s look at certain warning signs of heart problems that one might experience during exercise. If you have any of them, immediately stop exercising and see a heart specialist. [1, 2, 3]

1. Chest Discomfort

Sudden chest pain or unexplained discomfort in the chest can be one of the first signs of an impending heart attack, especially while doing exercises. This feeling can range in its intensity from mild discomfort to intolerable pressure, and a fuller feeling at the center of the chest. It can be elusive and may appear and disappear. If this symptom persists for more than a few minutes, it’s time to promptly take help from a medical practitioner.

Furthermore, during physical activity, if one experiences chest tightness, wheezing, and coughing, it could be an indication of exercise-induced asthma which is more likely to occur if one has a family history of asthma. [1, 3]

2. Trouble in Breathing

An abnormal difficulty in breathing alongside chest discomfort or pinching chest pain during physical activity/ exercises could be a sign of a heart attack or its precursor. Breathing issues can happen either before one experiences chest pain/discomfort or even without any discomfort/pain in the chest. Normally, fast breathing or shortness of breath occurs when one does a workout. However, when one is doing physical activity or performing it at high intensity with ease suddenly gets winded/experiences shortness of breath, it could be due to a potential heart attack, exercise-induced asthma, heart failure, or any other medical condition.

Moreover, while breathing during straining exercises, one can also experience pain, swelling, and sharp pain. These could be due to muscle strain or injuries. The intercostal muscles which help stabilize the chest and allow normal breathing, might be injured. [1, 2, 3]

3. Light-Headedness, Extreme Tiredness, or Dizziness

Rigorous exercises can not only lead to body aches but also make one feel fatigued, dizzy, or light-headed. Mostly, this is because one has pushed too hard or didn’t eat or drink aptly before going for a workout. These symptoms could be a sign of diabetes, dehydration, a blood pressure problem, or possibly an issue with the nervous system. Dizziness could be an indication of a heart valve problem or an impending heart attack. If one is not able to get back to normal after taking breaks from exercises for water and snacks or if the light-headedness is accompanied by confusion, profuse sweating, or even fainting- one requires emergency medical attention.

One must be aware of the fact that no exercises should ever make an individual feel dizzy or light-headed, if that is happening it’s a for-sure sign that something is not right. If one experiences fainting along with chest pain, shortness of breath, and dizziness while exercising, it could be because of Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy. [ 2, 3]

4. Abnormal Heart Rhythms

Throughout the workout, it’s important to keep track of the heart rate. Exercises do raise the heart rate but during rest periods the heart rate must start to come down. One must realize that heart thumping, skipping, or palpitating are all indications of heart issues including a heart attack. If the heart rate is staying high or beating out of rhythm even at rest, it’s time to stop exercising immediately. [1, 2,]

5. Pain

Noticing a sudden chronic pain in the back, neck, or jaw radiating from the chest, may signal a heart condition like a heart attack, especially if the origin is not easy to pinpoint. However, if one is experiencing chest, tightness, pain, or pressure along with symptoms like difficulty breathing, jaw pain (feeling like a bad toothache), nausea, or fatigue, it could be a sign of angina and not a heart attack. If this pain/discomfort begins or worsens when one is exerting himself/herself, then exercising must be discontinued and medical help must be taken as soon as possible. [1, 3]

6. Profuse Sweating

Sweating is the body’s way to cool itself and maintain its internal temperature in balance with the atmospheric temperature/ weather conditions. A regular workout won’t usually cause much sweating but if the body is stressed, it will overcompensate. A sudden increase in sweating while exercising could be a sign of trouble. It could be a dangerous symptom of any sort of heart concern including heart attack, especially when it is accompanied by nausea. [2, 3]

7. Numbness in the Left Arm

While exercising, if suddenly one is not able to feel anything, except maybe tingling from shoulder to the hand, it could be a serious symptom of a potential heart attack. During a heart attack, there is an obstructed blood flow in the coronary artery because of a blockage. Sometimes, one might have problems with the arteries and veins that carry blood throughout the body. Vascular disease can result in numbness and tingling in the arm. [4]

It could be life-threatening, if one does not pay attention to any of the above-mentioned symptoms Continuing exercises and not going for immediate medical attention, if experiencing this symptom, can put one’s heart at risk of cardiac arrest and have long-lasting ill effects. Not only the heart, but these effects can also even impact other internal organs as they get deprived of oxygen to work normally. Thus, it’s recommended to slowly progress with a workout with the help of a trainer and not forget to rest, have a healthy diet, avoid smoking, drug, or alcohol intake, drink plenty of water, and even keep blood pressure and blood sugar levels in check.

Dementia is not a specific disease rather it is an overall term for a collection of symptoms that are caused by brain disorders. These symptoms differ according to the part of the brain that is damaged. Usually, the effect is on one’s memory, thinking, and social abilities and the impact is severe enough to interfere with one’s daily life. The most common type of dementia is Alzheimer’s but there are other kinds such as:

Young-onset dementia- where symptoms start appearing before the age of 65.

Lewy Body dementia- is caused by protein deposits called alpha-synuclein (the abnormal Lewy bodies) inside the nerve cells of the brain.

Vascular dementia- is caused by loss of blood flow to the brain and is likely to have a major impact on one’s thinking and problem-solving ability.

Frontotemporal dementia- a rarely seen group of brain disorders that affects the language abilities and behaviour.

Mixed dementia- when one has more than one type of dementia. [1, 2, 3]

Dementia Is More Common in Women Than Men

Dementia is more common in aged women rather than men as on average women have a longer life span than men. In addition, after scanning of brains of people with dementia, experts have found that brain cells naturally die faster in women than they do in men. Researchers also suggest that the female sex hormone, estrogen helps cells to communicate more effectively in the prefrontal cortex and hippocampus region of the brain, which could increase their risk of dementia too. [2]

Whether if one is concerned about themselves or about their loved one, they need to be aware of the warning signs of dementia, so that one can make sure and keep a check on the early diagnosis. These symptoms involve cognitive and psychological changes.

Here are the most common 10 warning signs of dementia.

1. Language Issues

Dementia patients can have trouble finding the right word to express themselves, may forget simple words, and may substitute wrong words into a conversation that others can’t understand.

2. Loss of Memory

It’s normal to occasionally have important things skipping the mind only if one remembers after a short while. However, anyone living with dementia would often forget things or even struggle to retain or recall any new information that they have received recently.

3. Difficulty Performing Usual Daily Tasks

People who are stuck in their busy schedule may at times forget their routine tasks like serving part of a meal but they would remember about it sometime later. However, in the case of dementia, one would forget how to perform a typical familiar task such as getting dressed or preparing a meal.

4. Impaired Judgment

In dementia patients, judgment and decision-making abilities are not apt. Thus, they may end up not recognizing something that could be a great risk for their health and safety like a medical condition that needs immediate attention from the doctor or wearing layers of clothing on a hot day.

5. Misplacing Things

Anyone who is in a hurry or not in a good mental state may temporarily misplace their belongings. However, those who are having dementia would start to put their things in appropriate places. For instance, they may keep a wristwatch in the freezer.

6. Disorientation to Place and Time

Many people might at some point in time have faced the same situation like entering a room and forgetting the reason for going there or having difficulty in remembering what date or day it is but might remember any time later. However, dementia patients have a problem remembering what day of the week, date, or time it is or can get easily lost in their street and not be able to find a way back to their home.

7. Problems with Abstract Thinking

Many people face difficulty in performing tasks that require abstract thinking such as balancing a check book or using a calculator. However, someone who has dementia may have significant difficulty in carrying out such tasks due to a loss of their understanding of what numbers and symbols mean and how they are to be used. They won’t be able to easily reason out things or solve problems.

8. Personality Changes

Over time, one’s personality can show subtle changes. Anyone having dementia would behave in a way that’s out of his/her character. They may experience striking changes in their personality and can become withdrawn, suspicious, or confused. The changes also involve fearfulness or lack of interest.

9. Changes in Mood and Behavior

Anyone at some point in time can feel sad or moody. However, people living with dementia can exhibit severe mood swings from being calm to tearful to angry without any apparent reason. They may have anxiety, depression, paranoia, hallucinations, and agitation.

10. Loss of Initiative

Normally, people do get tired of household chores, social obligations, or business activities, but they usually regain their initiative. However, people with dementia may lose interest in their family, friends, and favorite activities. They may become passive in the work they have started and would need cues and prompting to become involved.

The dementia symptoms can vary based on the cause. Other than the above-mentioned signs of dementia, one can even experience challenges in understanding visual and spatial information. Dementia patients can have problems in seeing things, have double vision, and face issues in navigating space such as getting lost while driving or easily and correctly placing things in their right place.

If one is concerned about any of the signs of dementia, the next step is to see a doctor. Only a qualified healthcare expert, after performing multiple tests and assessments, can confirm one of having dementia.

Note that all symptoms of dementia are not listed here, the symptoms vary based on the type of dementia. Each one has its own set of early symptoms. In advanced dementia, memory loss and difficulties in communication often become severe. The patients also face mobility issues, behavioral problems, appetite and weight loss problems, and even urinary bladder incontinence. [1, 2]

References:

https://alzheimer.ca/en/about-dementia/do-i-have-dementia/10-warning-signs-dementia

https://www.elder.org/dementia-care/signs-of-dementia-in-women/

https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/dementia/symptoms-causes/syc-20352013#:~:text=Dementia%20is%20a%20term%20used,memory%20loss%20has%20different%20causes.

Most people are unaware of the gallbladder and its functions while some find the gallbladder as their area of concern. The gallbladder is a small, pear-shaped organ located just beneath the liver. Its role is to store extra bile juice released from the liver. These bile acids help in the breakdown of fatty foods. The bile acid is released from the gallbladder to the small intestine through a connecting tube called the bile duct to digest the fatty food. [1, 2, 3]

Unfortunately, there may be times when the gallbladder is not acting as efficiently as intended, hence affecting one’s general well-being. As a result, there could be a multitude of undesirable consequences such as the build-up of thick bile acids that could create obstructions in the gallbladder and prevent it from getting emptied properly. This could be due to many possible outcomes, most likely of which are gallstones. When this happens, it’s a sure sign to either get the gallbladder issue treated (if minor) or get the organ surgically removed entirely- a procedure called a cholecystectomy. [3]

When do Doctors Recommend Cholecystectomy?

1. Symptomatic Gallstones

Gallstones are the solid bile deposits that form within the gallbladder. They become problematic if they get stuck inside the gallbladder or any of the bile ducts and cause inflammation, infection, nausea, vomiting, bloating, and/or abdominal pain. In some cases, gallstones can lead to biliary colic- a specific kind of pain that is often first felt in the upper right part of the abdomen and sometimes may radiate to the right shoulder or upper back starts in the middle of the night or soon after having a meal, lasts for about 15 minutes or several hours, and may cause nausea and vomiting. If these symptoms appear, it’s an indication to get the gallbladder removed at the earliest or there is a higher risk of severe complications of gallstones.

2. Acute Cholecystitis

It is the inflammation of the gallbladder which is a serious medical condition that can only be treated by surgical removal of the gallbladder.

3. Pancreatitis

When gallstones slip into the bile duct and block it, the pancreatic enzymes are stopped to travel into the small intestine and forced to return to the pancreas. This causes inflammation of the pancreas which in turn could lead to serious health issues. Thus, the best way to treat it would be to completely remove the gallbladder.

4. Cancer of the Gallbladder

Gallbladder cancer is the rarest type of cancer. But, if one is suffering from gallbladder cancer or is at high risk of developing the same, cholecystectomy can be beneficial for survival.

5. Other Gall Bladder Issues

Anyone having choledocholithiasis or Biliary dyskinesia is also recommended for gallbladder removal. Choledocholithiasis is a medical condition wherein the common bile duct contains one or more gallstones. Biliary dyskinesia is a motility or functional disorder of the gallbladder where the organ is not effectively contracting and ejecting the bile acids.[ 2, 3]

Common Signs and Symptoms that Indicate the need for Gallbladder Removal

1. Abdominal Pain

It is the most commonly reported symptom in patients having gallbladder stones that typically occur after eating. The pain can be described as anything from sharp and stabbing to cramping and dull. One may confuse it with pain from gas or acid reflux because of its intermittent nature. However, one must be careful about the potential dangers of any abdominal pain that lasts for several hours.

The abdominal pain due to gallbladder issues is typically felt in the direct center or upper right portion of the abdomen. For some patients, it may extend to the right shoulder blade and the upper back. The pain may be stronger either while having greasy or fatty foods or when taking a deep breath. Immediate medical attention is advised when one is experiencing intense pain such that he/ she cannot sit or find any comfortable position.

2. Digestive Issues

Just like symptoms of many digestive issues, gallstones can lead to symptoms like vomiting, nausea, dark urine, and abnormal color of the stool. If someone is having chronic gallbladder disease, he or she may experience undesirable symptoms such as indigestion, acid reflux, excess gas, and heartburn. These signs may make it difficult for one to distinguish the problem with the gallbladder from other digestive problems. If there are more than four bowel movements on daily basis for at least three months or unexplained fever, it could signal an infection that needs to be treated without much delay.

3. Weight Changes

Obese or overweight people are more likely to have gallstones because weight gain can alter the balance of bile acids and cholesterol in the gallbladder. They would find more difficulty in getting their gallbladder emptied as the excess of cholesterol and bile acids would accumulate in their gallbladder and harden to form gallstones. This means losing weight could surely help one reduce the risk of gallstones, but if weight loss is rapid, it can also trigger gallstones because of the potential imbalance between the levels of cholesterol, bile acids, and lecithin. Usually, this case is seen in people who have undergone bariatric surgery as they tend to lose significant weight in the first 3-6 months and women during and immediately after their pregnancy. Those who desire weight loss must go for daily exercises and a well-balanced diet as extremely low intake of fats in diets can inhibit the contractions of the gallbladder. [1]

How is the Gallbladder Removed?

Laparoscopy cholecystectomy is the minimally invasive procedure to remove the gallbladder. It involves proving general anesthesia to the patient to ensure comfort throughout the surgery. The procedure commences with the making of four small incisions along the abdomen. These cuts are used to insert a laparoscope and other specialized surgical instruments into the abdomen. The abdomen is inflated with gas to provide the surgeon with more inner space to operate better. During the procedure, the surgeon along with his/her supporting team makes use of a tiny camera fitted at end of the laparoscope and a monitor to navigate easily inside the body and operate on the gallbladder. After the removal of the gallbladder, X-rays are taken to ensure that remaining gallstones or bile are not causing any obstructions and the gallbladder is further checked for cancer. [3]

References:

https://whalenclark.com/warning-signs-you-might-need-your-gallbladder-removed/

https://www.goodrx.com/conditions/gallstones/signs-you-need-your-gall-bladder-removed

https://arizonapremiersurgery.com/2020/12/10/warning-signs-you-may-require-gallbladder-surgery/
